How to be an Above Average Student

If there is one word that most people have a severe disdain for, it is the word average. No one wants to be average, and really no one wants to be called average.

We want to be unique in our own way (just like everybody else). We want a high IQ, we want a good paying job, we want an amazing partner - we want every area of who we are to be above average.

And, although most of us fall under the statistical classification of average, there are a few simple things that you as a student can do to be an above average in your studies.

1. Be teachable.

Intellect is wasted on a person who is not teachable. It doesn’t matter how smart you are or how quickly you learn, if you are not teachable your mental capabilities might as well be on par with a goldfish.

Be teachable and be willing to be taught. Very few students possess this trait and sadly they are not better for it.

2. Read the information your university sends you.

Almost none of our students read the orientation information - and we can see it in their actions and emails. The number of emails we receive with queries about basic procedures and the most basic workings of our University is frankly shocking.

So make a point of reading through all of the orientation information that your university gives you. As an online university, this is how we communicate - by giving our students materials to read through so that they can better understand what to do and what is expected of them.

If you want to be above average, read through the orientation information and act accordingly.

3. Do the weekly coursework.

Not many students consider this: The staff can see how much of the coursework you complete. Seeing the stats on our website is one way to check how many students did the work, but another clear indicator is exam results.

You are fooling no one by not doing the work. An above average student, one who stands out, one who the staff appreciate, is a student that simply does the work they should do.

Being an above average student doesn’t mean that you have to obtain a specific grade or have a specific IQ. It can be achieved by showing the admin staff some love; by doing the coursework that you signed up for, and by reading through the student orientation materials.

Most people think of great, grand things that could make them stand out from the crowd, but from my humble experience, the people that stand out are the people who do the small things. Those around you aren’t going to care how well you scored on an exam if you make the lives of everyone around you difficult during exam times. So, do the small, average things, because that is what will set you apart from the rest.
