2 Things Not to do During an Exam Series

Exam season is almost upon us and we are all working hard to prepare. Here are two things to avoid doing as you get ready for the upcoming exams:

1. Don’t neglect your sleep.

Make a point to get enough sleep. Without a sufficient amount of sleep, your cognitive function and ability to retain information will suffer greatly.

Rest is an important part of maintaining a well functioning body. We cannot expect our bodies to continually function at an optimal level if we do not allow it to rest and recover between study sessions.

2. Don’t study 24/7.

Many students prioritise studying to an extreme degree right before the exam series starts. For some students, this works, but for the majority of people this hampers productivity.

No sane person would expect their body to be physically capable of spending their every waking moment running as a means to train for a marathon. Every athlete knows how important it is to let their bodies rest and recover from training sessions. Why do we expect our brains to function any differently?

People can’t function the same way that a computer does. We cannot do the same task hour after hour for weeks on end without growing tired or, worse, bored. Sometimes the best thing to do for your own productivity is to get up and do something else for a bit. Taking a break to read a book for an hour, go for a walk, or do something creative can make the world’s difference to your productivity. This is how we allow our brains to recover.

Taking your mind off your studies can and will also reduce stress levels. Giving yourself a legitimate break from thinking and working to retain information, can help reduce stress greatly.

Rather than spending every waking hour on studies, schedule study sessions throughout the day along with breaks and activities that will help you recover from these intense sessions as well. Break up study sessions with workouts or a meal with loved ones; sometimes walking away from your notes and taking your mind off the upcoming exams for short periods of time will help with your overall productivity when you do sit down to study again.
