Practical Ways to Adapt to a Sedentary Lifestyle

It is no surprise to anyone that we, as a society, are less active. Of course, we are not better off because of this. We have all heard about the health complications that can result from not moving enough, from being stuck in front of a computer all day, but most of the time we shrug our shoulders and say something along the lines of, “What can we do?” and continue with our sedentary existence.

There are things to be done, however. So here are some practical ways to adapt to a sedentary lifestyle:

1. Take time to move your body.

Take a minute to walk to the kitchen to make yourself a cup of coffee or tea, stretch a bit while the kettle boils, maybe even do a few jumping jacks to get the blood flowing again. Walk around while making phone calls, take the stairs, and find the time to move around - even if you only take a ten minute walk at the end of each day.

Taking short, frequent breaks to move your body can make a world’s difference when it comes to how you feel overall and even how well you function at work. Oftentimes brain fog can be greatly reduced by taking a minute and shaking things up - literally.

2. Take time to stretch.

Stretching is a fantastic way to improve how you feel after a long day of sitting still. It improves your mood greatly and will help prevent many possible health problems that may come from sitting still for long periods of time.

We have a blog on simple stretches to do, if you would like more information on stretching. https://imperium-uni.blogspot.com/2021/06/easy-stretches-for-students-and-desk.html

3. Avoid mindless snacking.

Working or studying online poses a few interesting challenges. One of the greatest being not overeating.

With the kitchen right there, it’s very easy to access a seemingly endless supply of coffee, when you would usually only have three cups throughout the entire day. It’s easy to grab a quick snack or three while working or studying. And it’s even easier to justify having lunch in front of the computer and keep “being productive,” all while being so distracted while you eat that you don’t even notice that you are eating anything to begin with.

Rather, take time to eat. Make an event of it. Walk all the way from the computer to the couch and enjoy your meal as a break away from the digital world. Doing this will help prevent overeating as you will be more present instead of being distracted.

There are many more things that can be done to improve a sedentary lifestyle, but adapting these three behaviours isn’t a bad place to start.
