Professional Etiquette

Studying online means being committed, disciplined and planning out your work and schedules. It also means knowing when to ask for help. If anything in your weekly lessons or your assignments confuses you, don't just ignore it - ask us about it! We're here to help make your university journey as enjoyable and un-confusing as possible.

That being said, when you contact us, whether it's via your student advisor or one of our student help emails, we ask that you adhere to proper etiquette, professionalism and efficiency. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • USE THE PROPER CHANNELS: send an email to the appropriate address (see Student Forum - Who to Contact When). We don't encourage Imperium staff to give out their personal numbers to students, but if for some reason you do have your advisor's number, we still ask you to send an email instead. If you require an urgent response, send your query to exams@imperium-uni.com. Please don't spam your advisor with messages or calls, at any time of the day.
  • CONSIDER THE TIME: This applies especially to contacting student advisors, but is relevant to all student help emails. The fastest response times are during normal work hours, between 8am and 5pm South African time. Correspondence outside of these hours may not be answered immediately. Emails sent to the Exams Team regarding issues with assignments and exams will however be prioritised and addressed as soon as possible.

Now let's talk about email etiquette. This is a skill that you are going to need all throughout your professional life, so this is a great chance to practice it with us!

Proper email etiquette includes:

  • A clear subject line (if your question is about a specific course and/or assignment, include the course and assignment code here)
  • A professional greeting
  • Proper grammar and no typos
  • A signature (don't forget to include your student number with your name!)

Always keep your tone professional and your message to the point. Include all relevant details pertaining to your query; the more efficient your email is, the more efficiently we will be able to help you.

Finally, don't forget to be polite! If you wouldn't say it to someone's face, then don't say it in an email.

One more thing

As mentioned above, remember to refer to the 'Who to Contact When' section of the Student Forum to know where to send your questions. This way the right person will be able to answer you more quickly.

So in summary, if you help us out by following the above guidelines, we will be able to make your experience with Imperium as smooth and enjoyable as possible!
