Taxation - Career Know-How

In general, taxes are something one tries to have on one's mind as little as possible, so why on earth study taxation? Well, according to a famous saying, taxes are as sure as death - and seem to get more complicated every year - which means there's a lot of work for experts in the field. Keep reading to find out more!

Degrees in taxation build off of a base of fundamental accounting subjects, and go on to specialise in different types of tax. Although further study after bachelor's level will improve your prospects and advancement opportunities (as with any career), a bachelor's degree (and maybe a little experience) will already start you off with strong job prospects.

Specialising in taxation will qualify you for advancement opportunities requiring specific skills and knowledge of taxation that might otherwise not have been open to you with only general accounting training.

Graduates might work for individuals, groups and organisations, or the government. Common positions include tax accountants, tax advisors, revenue agents, financial/tax consultants, and many others. Commonly professionals choose one area of taxation to focus on, such as corporate or individual tax, but there are those who work in multiple areas.

If you are considering this career, you should have a knack for numbers, an analytical mind, great organisational and time-management skills, and an eye for detail. A misplaced comma or digit could be the difference between hundreds of dollars saved, or hundreds of dollars down the drain!

So if you are considering studying something accounting-related, consider taxation. Your personal finances, and those of possibly hundreds of other people, will thank you!
