Sport Communications - Career Know-How

Are you a sport junkie with a knack for writing? Do you always talk your friends' ears off about that ludicrous display last night? Well, it sounds like you might want to consider a career in sport communications.

Now, before you get too excited, keep in mind that this degree isn't just all about teaching you how to get paid while raving about your favourite team. Despite the specialisation, there's actually quite a wide range of subjects you will be studying. From Law and the Media to Anatomy and Kinesiology to Sport Tourism and Sociology, you'll be equipped for many different career paths, even outside the realm of sport.

Journalism (sport or otherwise), public relations, sport promotion, and of course broadcast media (radio and television) are all areas that will be open to you. You will learn how to communicate your passion to an exceedingly enthusiastic audience, via print and your voice, so good writing and speaking skills are a must.

Having natural charisma will be a great asset, especially if you want to get into broadcast media, such as being a sport commentator on television or an announcer on the radio. If you're soft spoken and don't enjoy the sound of your own voice, this might not be the career for you.

Upon completion of your degree, you will be qualified for many entry-level positions, and with experience will be able to work your way up the ranks. If you have your eye on more senior and management-level positions however, start thinking about the possibility of pursuing post-graduate studies.

Sport communications is a hugely varied, exciting and dynamic field, with lots of competition (pun intended). But with enough passion for the game and the beauty and benefits that come with sport as a whole, you'll surely enjoy your time here.
