Editing - Career know-how

Considering Editing as a possible Career? We've compiled a list of the basic know-how you should be aware of. Yes, there's a bit more to it than just proof-reading a couple of manuscripts.

So before we start, lets just look at what an Editor actually does... :) Editors don't just refine the work of various publications, they also provide guidance to writers that help develop and enrich their work. Editors assist with page layouts, providing insight on how people will view content. Editors will help brainstorm ideas that can take a great concept to a best-seller. They also check that facts published are true, accurate and free of any spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes.

First off, you will need to obtain an undergraduate degree in either Editing, Journalism, English (or chosen language) or Communications. A Bachelors degree tends to be 3-years in length and there are various options from full-time to part-time study options available. Throughout your studies you will be introduced to subject areas such as the History of Journalism, Media's power and role in Society and Publishing Studies.

Once you have identified your study method, it is crucial to start working on gaining the needed experience. Consider applying for positions such as an Editorial Assistant, Proofreader, Fact Checker, Reporter or any Writing positions you can find. The more experience you can get on the writing and reviewing side, the better. Its always easier to provide powerful insights when you have the know-how and experience from both ends - like seeing the full picture and not just a one-sided opinion.

While building your resume with your relevant work-experience, ensure to spend time playing around and becoming comfortable with technology. There are various editorial tools available out there. Being hands-on and familiar with more of these will not just aid you in impressing your potential boss in an interview, but will save you loads of time in the future. There's nothing more frustrating than struggling to do your job, not because of lack of knowledge, but because of technical difficulties.
