5 TED Talks to Lift You Up and Inspire You

We’ve talked about TED in a previous article, specifically the podcast TED Talks Daily, but this week we’ll have a look at the infinitely better-known YouTube channel. In challenging times, it’s easy to be anxious, afraid, lazy, frustrated, unhappy, bored, stifled – I could go on and on. It serves us well to look for inspiration when this happens, something to keep our minds engaged and looking towards the future, while also giving us perspective in the present and helping us realise that things might still be pretty ok right now, all things considered. And let’s not forget to throw in a little fun for good measure. Exploring the TED YouTube channel is a great way to do all of those things. Here are 5 fantastic TED Talks to show you what I mean.

Inside the mind of a master procrastinator – Tim Urban

For all the procrastinators out there, as well as the procrastinators that claim they’re non-procrastinators, this is a delightfully relatable and adorably presented talk that will make you laugh, nod your head knowingly, and potentially reconsider some life choices – but in a good way.

10 ways to have a better conversation – Celeste Headlee

Even more relevant now than it was in 2016 when the video was released, this talk reminds us of the importance of listening and how it helps us form deeper connections with people. The ‘us versus them’ attitude that so many of us have when forming opinions deprives us of something precious: the ability to learn from each other, no matter what we disagree on. As Headlee says: “Enter every conversation assuming you have something to learn.”

Every kid needs a champion – Rita Pierson

This short talk will be especially interesting to those of you who want to become educators, but its not-to-be-missed message is one we can all appreciate and think about, and one that hopefully won’t soon be forgotten.

The danger of a single story – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

In this talk Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie talks about the danger of single-sided narratives and the importance of remembering that every person and every place has much more than just a single story that represents it.

The orchestra in my mouth – Tom Thum

Finishing off on a lighter and maybe weirder note, Tom Thum’s video is sure to brighten your day with something unexpected and weirdly amazing. His hilarious quirkiness and showmanship will draw you in and leave you wondering: “What the heck did I just watch? And is there more of it?”
